From NEW BEGINNINGS, Vol. 23 No 4, July-August 2006, p. 172

La Leche League International Conferences are known for presenting cutting-edge breastfeeding topics. This event also provides the best and latest research on a variety of parenting topics.

In 2007 at the LLLI Conference, 50 Years -- Celebrating the Power of Breastfeeding, one such energetic and engaging speaker will be Douglas A. Gentile, PhD, who runs the Media Research Lab at Iowa State University, where he studies media's effects on children and adults. Dr. Gentile will discuss the effects of television, video games, and the Internet on children. He is the author of the recently published book, Violent Video Games, and has written and spoken prolifically about the connection between media and brain development, the effects of television and video game violence on children, the effects of tobacco and alcohol advertising on adolescents, and the psychology of advertising.

Kim John Payne, MEd, a sought-after speaker noted for his warmth and clarity, will also be speaking at the LLLI Conference. He has worked for 20 years as a counselor, adult educator, consultant, researcher and educator, and produces CDs and videos on many parenting topics. Dr. Payne will explain why less is more during "Simplicity Parenting," and discuss training creative compliance for the young child, building emotional skills for the elementary age, and helping the teenager manage critical choices at the session, "The Soul of Discipline."

Psychologist James Garbarino, PhD, will offer real world solutions for parents during his session. Dr. Garbarino is an internationally recognized expert on child development and youth violence. He helped UNICEF to assess the impact of the 1991 Gulf War upon children in Kuwait and Iraq and served as a consultant for Bosnian and Croatian children. Author of Lost Boys: Why Our Sons Turn Violent and How We Can Save Them and See Jane Hit: Why Girls are Growing More Violent and What Can Be Done About It, his session will contribute to a deeper and more complete understanding of violence in children and the steps parents can take to help reverse this tragic trend.

Plan to celebrate the power of breastfeeding in Chicago, Illinois, USA, at the La Leche League International Conference, July 20-23, 2007. The Conference will be the culmination of a year's worth of events marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of LLLI in 1956.

The Conference will be held at the Hilton Chicago, which overlooks beautiful Lake Michigan. Be sure to save time before or after the Conference to experience all that Chicago has to offer, including award winning museums, world-famous shopping, and exquisite dining. "The Windy City" is known for fascinating architecture and neighborhoods that pulse with history and culture. Breeze in for the latest in breastfeeding and parenting information, stay for the sights.
