Mother Support, Going for the Gold
Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week in 2008
From NEW BEGINNINGS, Vol. 25, No. 3, 2008, p. 29
To honor La Leche League International's ongoing efforts to support breastfeeding mothers around the world, go to www.llli.org/donate.html.
In 1992, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) launched World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), which is held on August 1-7 every year. Currently, more than 120 countries worldwide celebrate WBW.
This year, the theme is Mother Support: Going for the Gold. This theme calls for increased support for mothers in achieving the gold standard of infant feeding, which is breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months, and continuing to breastfeed while feeding other appropriate complementary foods for up to two years and beyond.
La Leche League International is a Core Partner of WABA along with the following organizations:
The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine
International Baby Food Action Network
International Lactation Consultant Association
Although the event is officially recognized in the first week of August, La Leche League Leaders and members around the world celebrate throughout the year. Some groups sponsor picnics, some organize walks and ask for donations, while others participate in health fairs -- all to raise awareness of the importance of breastfeeding, the need for mother support, and La Leche League International. At the LLLI Office, the building entrance prominently displayed a WBW banner, and staff members participated in a walk around the lake at the office complex as well as a celebratory luncheon.
For information about LLL Groups that are celebrating World Breastfeeding Week events in your area, go to www.llli.org. To read more about WBW, see WABA's Web site at www.waba.org.my.
World Breastfeeding Week around the world!
The WBW 2008 Virtual Torch Run was launched in June and will go on until the end of the year. This Web site indicates WBW participants who celebrate from August to December 2008. For every pledge that is received, a virtual torch will be illuminated on the world map. To see the virtual torches or to create one for your event, go to www.worldbreastfeedingweek.org.
