Staten Island NY USA
From New Beginnings, Vol. 25 No. 5, 2008, p. 22
I have been a La Leche League Leader for 40 years. I am a mother of six children and a grandmother of 15 and live in Staten Island, New York, USA.
Recently I was talking to my neighbor outside. Another neighbor passed, stopped, and said, "Although we rarely see one another, I must tell you a story. Thirty-five years ago, my husband and I planned to move from Brooklyn to Staten Island. This was the very first area we looked at. There were only a few houses built then. I told my husband that this is where I wanted to move. He became upset, saying 'We haven't seen any other place!' I replied, 'No, I want to move here!' 'Why?' 'Lynne Stone just walked over to greet me. That's her house on the corner. I went to a La Leche League meeting in her house in Brooklyn five years ago, when our second child was born. I called her several times for advice. Then I was able to nurse successfully. I know we will have a good neighbor; someone who cares. That's why we don't have to look any place else for a house!'"
I was stunned when I heard this story. A wonderful example of how La Leche League can change people's lives. I am thankful to have found out so many years later that I influenced a "new beginning."
